At 19, Darren T. Kimura founded Energy Industries as a summer project while on break from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Today the company is a Hawaii based national company with offices in Seattle, San Francisco, Spokane, Portland, Boise, Dallas, Honolulu, Guam and the Philippines. A leader in its market and recipient of numerous industry awards, Energy Industries created 7 spin-off companies, invented 3 products and acquired numerous mainland based firms.

In 2000, Darren was awarded "Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year" and named to the Pacific Business News first "Top Forty under 40" list. In 2002, he was awarded "Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Hawaii", California, Nevada and Arizona. He has been awarded numerous additional industry distinctions, has written 5 papers in energy, has been a speaker at a number of conferences throughout the US and for the Department of Energy, Guam Energy, Palau Energy, and Saipan Energy offices.
