Infectious Disease Pandemic Possibilities What’s Real and What’s False Are You at Risk or is it Media Hype?

The news media have flooded us with stories and images of “worst case scenario” infectious disease pandemic possibilities. Does the hype live up to the reality? To learn the unbiased facts, gain perspective and make rationale personal plans you’ll want to attend this months CyberPizza, Tuesday, June 9, in the UH-M Marine Sciences Auditorium. Tony Gelish, an Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton – Honolulu, will share the latest scientific information with you in layman’s terms. In addition, to an overview of H1N1, “Swine flu” and H5N1 “Avian flu” he will alert you to 10 other less publicized but potentially more virulent, lethal and catastrophic infectious diseases that are on the horizon. The presentation will conclude with simple, inexpensive preventive measures you can take to reduce your risk.

Currently, Tony Gelish is supporting US Pacific Command, J35 - Future Operations, J359 - Civil Military Operations as an infectious disease technical analyst and the project manager for a $9.5M Pandemic Influenza mitigation planning effort. This effort is comprised of 22 PI mitigation preparedness and response training, education and planning projects primarily being conducted in Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Nepal and Vietnam. Additionally, his work requires authoring mission assurance/continuity of operations Concepts of Operations (CONOPS), Alert Orders (ALERTORD), Planning Orders (PLANORD), and Execution Orders (EXORD) for Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Response activities supported by Combined Support Force – 503, US Marine Forces – Pacific (MARFORPAC) and Defense Support to Civil Authorities (DSCA) for Joint Task Force – Homeland Defense (JTF-HD), US Army – Pacific (USARPAC).

From October 2006 to December 2008 Tony supported Continuity of Operations Planning and development of Enterprise Continuity Planning policy and guidance for the U.S. Navy Network Warfare Command (NAVNETWARCOM) Outside the Continental United States (OCONUS) Navy Enterprise Network (ONE-NET) at Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) Naples, Italy; Al Manama, Jaffhair, Bahrain; and Yokosuka, Japan. Tony is a Fellow, American College of Healthcare Executives, a Certified Professional Logistician, Society of Logistics Engineers and a Certified Anti-Terrorism Officer. He earned his Bachelors of Business Administration, Marketing, with a minor in Philosophy from Loyola University of Chicago in 1972. In 1982 he completed a Masters of Science in Systems Management, Technology, from the Institute of Safety and Systems Management, Viterbi School of Engineering of the University of Southern California.
